The Ultimate Fighter Live – How well is this going to work?

The house has been set! The Ultimate Fighter Live premiere went down fairly smoothly on Friday night. There were some slow moments and some technical issues with the broadcast (please move your logo out of where the fighter’s head is at) but all in all I thought it was a great show. The one round format created a frenzied atmosphere with the combatants going full tilt as they didn’t have to worry about blowing their wad in the first round. Because that was the only round available for wad blowing. Read more »

UFC 144 – The WEC was for real

New UFC Champion Ben HendersonBefore the WEC was absorbed into the UFC there was endless discussion on how the fighters there would fair under the bright lights of a UFC event. The general consensus was this…not well.  WEC fighters were something of the D league of MMA.  They were the best of the fighters who weren’t good enough to make it into the UFC. Read more »

UFC 142 Rousimar Palhares and Why His Leg Locks Actually Work

Palhares at UFC 142At UFC 142 Rousimar Palhares submitted Mike Massenzio with a nasty heel hook just a minute into the first round. Massenzio tapped quickly in pure agony. Why? We see leg locks all the time in MMA and fighters just shrug them off like they’re nothing. So why are Palhares’ so devastating? It’s actually quite simple: Most jiu jitsu guys don’t train heel hooks.

It’s actually considered very bad etiquette to slap one on while rolling.  The reason being quite simple -  they’re just too dangerous.  Unlike an arm bar that is going to hurt like all hell for at least a few seconds before your arm snaps like a twig, a heel hook goes from no pain to blown up knee almost instantly.  It’s a move that is banned in a lot of grappling tournaments.  A blown ACL is a year of misery.  It’s just not worth it. UFC 141 Lesnar vs. Overeem Fight Was…Weird.

Overeem

Overeem in Victory

So let me get this straight; when Brock Lesnar fought Cain Velasquez he rushed him and looked for the quick takedown.  Cain Velasquez is a wrestler.  He wasn’t able to get the takedown.  He ended up getting put away fairly quickly.

Fast forward to UFC 141.  Lesnar is facing Overeem.  The best striker in mixed martial arts.  He comes out and…looks to trade with him?

I don’t get it.

Lesnar bounced around a little in his best Dominic Cruz impersonation and threw superfluous jabs that Overeem paid zero attention to.  After the first minute Overeem became so unimpressed with Lesnar’s striking that he stopped throwing punches.  He just waded in and started throwing monster knees.
